Technology overview

Lumentum’s technology portfolio is anchored by indium-phosphide (InP) device fabrication — the III-V semiconductor platform on which laser sources for fiber-optic transmission are built. The company also operates a VCSEL line (vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers) for 3D-sensing and short-reach datacom, plus telecom-transport components (ROADM, wave-shapers, tunable lasers, optical amplifiers).

InP EML — 200G/lane (load-bearing AI-photonics node)

The electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) is the dominant transmitter source for 100G/200G/400G/800G fiber-transmission systems. Lumentum is one of two merchant suppliers globally (alongside Coherent Corp), with the other large captive-volume builders being internal NTT/Sumitomo for telecom only.

Note on multi-architecture transceivers: while pluggable transceivers branded as “EML-based” use Lumentum’s 200G EML at the source, several 1.6T modules use silicon-photonics modulators with InP CW source lasers, not EMLs — e.g., the Lumentum 1.6T 2×DR4 TRO OSFP and 800G 2×DR4 OSFP. The 1.6T DR8 TRO OSFP, by contrast, uses 8× 200G EMLs. EML is one of multiple optical-engine architectures Lumentum ships at 1.6T.

The 200G/lane EML node is the load-bearing AI-photonics asset: 800G optical transceivers built on 4×200G EML modulation enable single-mode-fiber datacenter optics for AI-cluster spine networks. The March 2026 NVIDIA $2B Series A Convertible Preferred investment funds Lumentum’s InP capacity expansion (anchored by the new Greensboro NC fab acquired from Qorvo on March 26, 2026 — 240,000 sq ft, 6-inch InP, mid-2028 ramp), with NVDA as the named anchor customer. 200G EML capacity grew ~40% June 2024 → June 2025, with another ~40% expected by end of CY2025.

VCSEL — 3D-sensing and short-reach

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers — Lumentum was the original primary Apple Face ID VCSEL supplier; Finisar (now Coherent Corp, NOT Broadcom) was the second-source Apple invested $390M into (May 2017 Advanced Manufacturing Fund award). Lumentum still ships VCSEL arrays for consumer 3D-sensing, automotive LiDAR, and short-reach (multi-mode) datacom optics. Avago/Broadcom is a separate VCSEL competitor in datacom multimode, not the Face ID origin partner.

ROADM and wave-shaper — telecom transport

Reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADM) and wave-shapers — Lumentum is the dominant merchant supplier of these subsystems for long-haul and metro coherent-DWDM systems. Customers include Ciena, Nokia, Cisco-Acacia, Infinera (now Nokia), and the major Chinese OEMs.

Datacom transceivers (Cloud Light)

The August 2023 ~$750M Cloud Light acquisition added fully-integrated 400G/800G/1.6T transceiver assembly capability. Cloud Light’s heritage is direct-to-hyperscaler optical transceivers, complementing Lumentum’s component-supplier position with finished-module shipments.

2028 CPO pivot

Lumentum has publicly framed co-packaged optics (CPO) as a 2028+ commercial-volume opportunity. The capacity built today for 200G/lane EML pluggable transceivers is positioned to feed CPO transceivers as much as pluggable form-factors when the CPO transition lands. Lumentum’s UHP 1310 nm DFB lasers are already integrated into NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X Photonics and Quantum-X Photonics CPO switches (announced at OFC 2025); CPO commercial-volume aligns with the NVIDIA Feynman GPU generation in 2028. Coherent is the parallel CPO source-laser partner, mirroring the merchant duopoly structure.

Optical Circuit Switching (OCS)

Beyond EML / VCSEL / CPO, Lumentum is also building an MEMS-based Optical Circuit Switch product line: the R300 (300×300) sampling H1 2025, GA H2 2025; R64 (64×64) sampling Q4 2025, GA H2 2026. This is a meaningful new AI-datacenter product category for sub-microsecond reconfigurable optical fabrics.
